DOCman 1.6.3 released
We are pleased to announce the immediately availability of DOCman 1.6.3 for Joomla 1.7. This release is available for download for all members of our Member Center.
This hotfix release fixes one (1) major bug in 1.6.2. This bug also affects all previous versions of DOCman 1.6.x. running on Joomla 1.7.3. DOCman 1.6.x running on Joomla 1.7.2 or below is not affected. This bug does not affect the DOCman 1.5.x series
We became aware of issues with DOCman 1.6.x running on Joomla 1.7.3 through user reports on our forums. A change in Joomla 1.7.3 caused an unanticipated `Itemid` regression in DOCman. The result was, in some cases, categories or documents which are meant to be visible to the public would ask you to login or would return a 403 error.
More information about the new releases can be found in our change-logs.

DOCman Secrets: Large file distribution
DOCman is well known for its ability to be used for small file distribution. But did you know that DOCman is as equally adept at serving large files without a huge resource gain?
In this edition of DOCman secrets, we give you a few tips and configuration changes that will help you use DOCman to deliver Gigabyte files with ease while maintaining the usual DOCman blend you are accustomed to.
Two roads for large files
There are two roads when we define large files.
The first of these roads would be the 0-150MB road and the second would be the 150MB to 8GB and beyond. The first road is the most simple and does not require too much sacrifice in terms of features.
- Set max_filesize_upload and post_max_size to within your upload range.
- Set session timeouts to ensure uploads don’t fail due to timed out sessions.
- Shift uploading to be done via FTP.
- Use remote links to ensure we don’t pass these large files through PHP and chew through memory.
- Ensure anti leech is on to hide your internal link structure.
- Ensure hide remote links is set to on.
And that covers road two.
Two separate paths both dealing with large file delivery and distribution and both using one platform, DOCman – grab your copy today from the Joomlatools store!

We are happy to announce the release of DOCman 1.6 for Joomla 1.6 and 1.7! Join our new Joomlatools club and download the latest update to the DOCman software in our Member Center.

A compatibility release
Conceived in 2003, DOCman has continued to be the premiere document management tool for Joomla for over 8 years. As many would already know we have been working on DOCman 2.0 which is itself a revolutionary rebuild of DOCman using Nooku Framework.
DOCman 1.6 does not include new features, instead we bring you the same stability, performance and security as DOCman 1.5 out of the box. It is intended that the DOCman 1.6 release will provide be a bridging solution for those already running with Joomla 1.6 or 1.7 and awaiting the release of DOCman 2.0.
DOCman Secrets: Standard Buttons
We are back once again with yet another post in the DOCman Secrets collection which already includes some really great posts such as: Brief Permissions a quick look into the inner wranglings of the DOCman ACL, Email notifications a breakdown of the Notify plugin, Generating Thumbnails a breakdown of the Autothumb plugin and last but by no means least Batch importing a detailed look at Populate.
In this edition I want to show you one of the most simple functions DOCman offers, the ability to turn specific buttons off in the frontend. Great if you ever felt the need to rid yourself of additional options or you just don’t have the real estate on your pages to offer as many options as DOCman puts out by default.

So how difficult is this to do? Very simple, each button has its own on/off switch located in the Plugin called ‘Standard Buttons’ which can be found in the Joomla Plugins Manager via the Joomla administrator.
Currently you can turn the following options on or off:
- DownloadView
- Details
- Edit
- Move
- Delete
- Update
- Reset
- Checkin/Checkout
- Approve
- Publish/Unpublish
That’s all for this edition of the DOCman Secrets, remember you can always get the support you need from the Joomlatools support portal or community forums!
Sneak peek into DOCman 2.0 development
Last week we gave you a view behind the Joomlatools curtain. Today we are pleased to tell you more about what our development team is doing, working hard on DOCman 2.0!
Our talented team have completely rewritten DOCman from top to bottom. DOCman 2.0 is powered by Nooku Framework and promises to be smaller, faster and smarter than ever before. Compatible with Joomla 1.5, Joomla 1.6 and Nooku Server out of the box.
Nooku Framework, the “new brain for Joomla”, is a rapid application development framework developed by our own Johan Janssens, Joomla 1.5′s lead developer. It allows us developers to develop in a blazing pace, while ensuring stability, maintenability and security.
An assortment of extensions is already using Nooku Framework as their engine, the most popular one being NinjaBoard. To this end, we will take every step to ensure smooth operation on sites where other Nooku Framework powered extensions are installed by using a compatible version of the Nooku Framework.
Yes folks, DOCman has been Nooku-fied and it’s coming soon!
