Sneak peek into DOCman 2.0 development

Last week we gave you a view behind the Joomlatools curtain. Today we are pleased to tell you more about what our development team is doing, working hard on DOCman 2.0!

Our talented team have completely rewritten DOCman from top to bottom. DOCman 2.0 is powered by Nooku Framework and promises to be smaller, faster and smarter than ever before. Compatible with Joomla 1.5, Joomla 1.6 and Nooku Server out of the box.

Nooku Framework, the “new brain for Joomla”, is a rapid application development framework developed by our own Johan Janssens, Joomla 1.5′s lead developer. It allows us developers to develop in a blazing pace, while ensuring stability, maintenability and security.

An assortment of extensions is already using Nooku Framework as their engine, the most popular one being NinjaBoard. To this end, we will take every step to ensure smooth operation on sites where other Nooku Framework powered extensions are installed by using a compatible version of the Nooku Framework.

Yes folks, DOCman has been Nooku-fied and it’s coming soon!

Smaller, Faster, Smarter

It’s smaller

  • DOCman 2.0 is rewritten from the ground up
  • Using the Nooku Framework has allowed us to write a lot less code

It’s faster

  • Less code means faster code
  • DOCman 2.0 is not only faster in code execution, development has also been faster

It’s smarter

  • Nooku Framework is the new brain for Joomla making it run on proven Design Patterns
  • The team’s years of experience has allowed us to code smart resulting in an even smarter product that users will enjoy

What to Expect

DOCman 2.0 is now in the final stages of alpha development. We expect a first beta release by the end of this quarter (Q2).

If you already loved DOCman 1.5, you will go gaga over DOCman 2.0. You will definitely be amazed by the Nooku magic that transformed this already great product into something more.

One last thing, we are also working on a brand new Support Portal. We’ve said it before, one of the aspects that can make software truly shine is great support. Finding better ways to give our users the support they deserve is one of our priorities.

Keep an eye on our blog for more information in the coming weeks.

That sounds great. Let me know if it is time to start with translations. I can do German.

    Nobs

  • http://johan.janssens.me Johan Janssens

Thanks Nobs, when we are ready for translations we will let you know.

  • http://www.facebook.com/rwessling Rouven Weßling

I can’t wait, DOCman is definitivly one of my favorite extension and for me the biggest reason not to use Joomla 1.6 on some sites.

I’m curios, will DOCman integrate with Joomla’s ACL system?

  • http://johan.janssens.me Johan Janssens

Thanks Rouven. We are building our own ACL solution and will offer integration with both 1.5 and 1.6. We already have a ACL integration of Joomla 1.6 in Nooku Framework.

  • Tread77

Any idea what month? I just took our work kbase to 1.6 for better ACL functionality and am looking at integrating a different tool since my existing DocMan won’t jive. If you guys have something soon I can hold off.

  • http://johan.janssens.me Johan Janssens

We don’t have a concrete date yet. We are now working hard to get the first beta ready.

  • Texan

    How to upgrade from 1.5?

  • http://johan.janssens.me Johan Janssens

It’s too soon to give an concrete information about upgrade, our first priority is to get the beta out. Once that’s done we will look at upgrading etc. More information will follow.

  • Bobthebob01

that was a very “sneaky” peek !!! lol
    can we see more !!!!

will there be a beta version available to play with?

  • http://johan.janssens.me Johan Janssens

There will be a beta version to play with. This version will be made available to paying customers. We are in final stages of the alpha phase, wrapping up alpha 8 this week. We expect to need a few beta before we have something that is fully testable.

  • Babsgosgens

Any chance of betatesting? I need mvc support badly :P

  • http://johan.janssens.me Johan Janssens

Once the beta is ready existing customers will be notified. Slowly getting there.

  • http://www.nlairsoft.com/ SlickAxe

Looks like there really isn’t a proper alternative to DOCMAN for J1.6 ;)

    Any update guys!?

  • http://johan.janssens.me Johan Janssens

The code refactoring is done, we are now working on setting up our new support portal. We are scheduling a release beginning of July.

  • http://www.nlairsoft.com/ SlickAxe

Johan great news! We will certainly give a test drive ones it’s available.

  • PaulJ

Hi.. I am looking for a new downloads system.. DocMan kinda looks good.. what would be so helpful to someone like me is to know: what is the feature list of DocMan 2 ? I am looking specifically for ‘Custom Fields’ which I see on the voting area for suggestions is ranked number 2. Is this is Docman 2?

What will be in Docman 2? (i.e. how does it compare in terms of features to 1.5?)

    Thanks!
    Paul

  • http://johan.janssens.me Johan Janssens

Hi Paul, we are going to start blogging about the many new features in DOCman 2 as from next week.

  • Ashma Shrestha

Do you have a specific date for the release yet? I am getting impatient :)

  • http://johan.janssens.me Johan Janssens

No data available at the moment. First up is the release of DOCman 1.6. We will then start making beta build available to our customers through our new customer portal.

  • http://twitter.com/ohmybrain Brian Williford 

May I pay to get into a beta program for a Joomla 1.6 version and get
the bet now? I would be more then glad to contribute monetarily so I can
    get going.

  • http://johan.janssens.me Johan Janssens

Brad, the Joomla 1.6 version is ready. We are on schedule to release  next week.

  • Pdi

Any news about the 2.0 release (for Joomla 1.6) ?

  • http://johan.janssens.me Johan Janssens

We are working hard on the release of DOCman 1.6 for Joomla 1.6. We are on shedule for a release early next week. Once this is out we will start providing beta releases of DOCman 2.0 for testing.

  • Peetree21

what if we don’t want a nookified version? i dont see the point in it, as joomla already has its own framework, which i know is being separated out to make it easier.

So if it needs nooku will that mean we need to install something else?

  • http://twitter.com/stipsan Stian Didriksen

Why wouldn’t you want a DOCman that’s smaller in size, do more, run faster and have smarter code?
And what makes you think Joomla Framework is comparable to Nooku Framework?

  • http://johan.janssens.me Johan Janssens

Thanks for your question. The simple answer is that the Joomla Framework doesn’t provide us with the features we need to build DOCman 2.0. ng for by only building on top of

The framework will be installed together with DOCman, just like we do today. A lesser know fact is that DOCman 1.5+ already includes it’s own framework. Nothing to worry about. We will make sure it all just works.

  • Kevin Hollenshead

Since Joomla 1.7 is out now and there is a dearth of information on DOCman (both 1.6 and 2.0), can we get a status update on where things are at?  It is coming up on 3 months since the blog post was made and we are nearing the end of the quarter, which was when the beta release was targeted according to the article.  Even if you updated a blog post every couple of weeks with a “still in progress – targeting XX/XX/XXXX” it would be better than no information at all.

  • http://live.47ronin.com/ Glenn Batuyong

I hope there will be some backwards-compatibility (path-wise) will the current Docman build because we have thousands of linked documents so far. I also hope there will be some support for a non-flat file system (can you imagine thousands of actual files in one dir?)

  • http://johan.janssens.me Johan Janssens

Hi Kevin. We are publishing a status update tomorrow. In short DOCman 1.6 has been released silently last week to allow us to iron out any issues with our new member center and subscriptions system.

  • http://johan.janssens.me Johan Janssens

Check ! We have non-flat file systems covered for DOCman 2.0. You will be able to add files from different folders.

    we’re getting close… i can’t wait to try DOCman 2.0.
I’m already running an extension using the Nooku Framwork, will there be any conflict when installing the new DOCman?

  • http://johan.janssens.me Johan Janssens

The initial beta’s we are releasing are for testing purposes only. We advice you to only use them on a none-production installation.

  • http://johan.janssens.me Johan Janssens

The beta version is not yet available. If you need DOCman for a client site we advise to use DOCman 1.5 or 1.6 in production. The first beta’s of DOCman 2.0 will be for testing purposes only.

The importance of regular eye checkups cannot be overemphasized. This is to ensure  your prescription is updated, vision is at its optimum, and that any eye condition that might be present is recognized early on. Although most eye problems present with obvious signs and symptoms, there are some serious eye conditions that do not have any visible signs or early warning symptoms. Getting the eyes checked regularly is critical to preserving eyesight especially in ageing adults

  • Jesus Hernandez

When can you post a release date for Docman 2.0 Beta version? i would appreciate your quick answer :D.

  • http://johan.janssens.me Johan Janssens

Hi, we are not giving any date for the launch of DOCman 2.0. We are working very hard to bring you the best document management extension for Joomla.

  • http://johan.janssens.me Johan Janssens

We not giving a release date for DOCman 2.0. We have been working very hard at moving all our existing customer to our new support portal. This has been fully completed and the team can now re-focus on DOCman 2.0 development.

Dear Team Docman.I would love to have the controls DOCMAN for my downloads, for use 1.5xwould be very interesting if we could limit downloads by date (2 days, 3 days) and also limits the number of downloads per user, for example the user (x) given downloaded file (2times) prevent the next download. I’m waiting for version 2.0 DOCMAN for purchase. Stay with God, Eves (BRAZIL).

  • http://johan.janssens.me Johan Janssens

Thanks ! This is already possible with DOCman 1.5, you can build a plugin that allow you to limit downloads by date or by number. No need to wait for the 2.0 version to do this.

  • Anonymous

DEAR Johan JanssensYou can buy, buy this plugin of you,to limit file downloads (doc.xls, pdf, etc. ..) per day (1 day, 2 days, 10 days), and also limit number of times per user.If possible send me the name of pluguim of you and how to buy or where to buy.Grateful, Eves.
