DOCman 1.5 RC2, and a new surprise…

We’re very excited about today’s release of DOCman 1.5 RC2 to our internal testers group. This is the final release candidate before we ship the stable version. Unfortunately, due to our decision to include a brand new theme, we are postponing the release until December 8th 9th, but it’s going to be worth the wait!

As we explained in our presentation on the Italian Joomla Day , apart from Joomla 1.5 native compatibility, we focused this release on stability, performance and security. Your data is important, and you count on DOCman to protect it!

Instead of adding all kinds of crazy features, messing with the database schema and what not, we decided to take a conservative approach. We only change what we consider important for everybody, and every change is carefully tested, both by our team and a number of testers.

Performance

DOCman 1.4 was a huge step ahead in performance compared to v1.3. When all the big roadblocks have been cleared, it’s hard to find ways to improve it even more. That’s why we’re all the more happy to say that we squeezed out a bit more. DOCman sites will run faster than ever before.

Brand new frontend theme

Good websites are not just about keeping confidential documents secure, and serving them with great performance. We all want our websites to look great as well! We’re very happy to announce that Tom designed a shiny new default front-end theme for DOCman 1.5. Besides looking beautiful, it was developed to be fit smoothly into almost any Joomla template.

Testers and translators

We’d like to thank everybody who offered to help out with testing, we really appreciate it. We received a lot of requests, giving us reason to believe that DOCman is more popular than ever. We couldn’t accept everybody, but not to worry, the wait is almost over.

Great job guys, looking forward to the new release. The new theme looks very nice also!

I’m really looking forward to seeing the new version in action. Thanks so much for the hard work in putting it together.

  • http://www.iwearglasses.net/ Paul Swain

This is looking great! I love DOCMAN, use it at work and now with this update I will be using it with my personal website. Just going to have to wait until December 8th! :)

  • http://expressionindesign.com/ Rick Blalock

Awesome! Are there database changes to this or is it all code base?

  • http://johan.janssens.me Johan Janssens

All codebase changes. We have opted not to make any database changes to make the upgrade process as seamlessly as possible.

For more info also see : http://blog.joomlatools.eu/2009/09/docman-15-internal-beta-released.html

  • http://expressionindesign.com/ Rick Blalock

@Johan – Awesome! That’s perfect. I am currently updating an intranet Joomla install that has Docman in it (tens of thousands of items). Very large corp is using it on their internal intranet but they have a special form they use for creating the entries (they don’t use the standard Docman way)…so no DB changes is great news!

  • http://johan.janssens.me Johan Janssens

Great ! We are always interested in learning how we can make the user interface better, especially for people managing lot’s of documents.

  • Thuf

Will there be any new features? such as the top ten requests?

  • http://johan.janssens.me Johan Janssens

To see the list of completed features you can check out our ideas tracker : http://ideas.joomlatools.eu/pages/10697-docman/filter/completed

The most important feature for the 1.5 release is the fact that it now runs natively in Joomla 1.5.

Hello! At Joomladay at Rome you promised that docman native for joomla 1.5. will be available at 1 dicember. Where I can download it? TNX!!

any chance on importing docs from rokdownloads from rockettheme?.. i used to use docman as my main doc manager back in the days of J1.0 but decided to stop ussing it cause i didnt want to use the legacy plugin, so some of my sites are using rokdownloads wich is not bad but.. its not docman!!!.. as simple as that XD

  • http://johan.janssens.me Johan Janssens

Thansk for your suggestion. We can definitely have a look at creating a Rokdownloads importer. If you need this immedialty you can send us a request for a quote (http://www.joomlatools.eu/services/request-a-quote.html) and we can have a look at building this for you.

Otherwise, you can add this request to our ideas and feature suggestions tracker here : http://ideas.joomlatools.eu/pages/docman if there is enough interest in the idea we will implement it in one of the upcoming releases.

  • Lau

wow, should i say that i love your responses!!!!… u guys definetly know what ur doing including the clients treatment part!!!.. always selling right ;)..

  • http://johan.janssens.me Johan Janssens

You are most welcome. Good support makes a good extension into an excellent extension. We are working on improving our support and communication with our users constantly and appreciate the feedback.

  • Kiselev Max

    Waiting impatiently! Great work!

  • http://live.47ronin.com/ Glenn Batuyong

just a friendly reminder to someday add subdirectory support! Thousands of files in one single directory makes for incredibly painful management for admins and the filesystem. and please someday make replacement of files possible from the Document interface (more intuitive for search purposes). thanks!

  • Michael

Cant hardly wait – only four days though, I might be able to manage

  • http://johan.janssens.me Johan Janssens

Subdirectory support is high on our own wishlist. It’s definitely coming in DOCman 2.0, might also make in in a 1.x release.

  • http://johan.janssens.me Johan Janssens

Thanks for you patience. The team is putting in overhours to make this the best DOCman release yet!

  • Vitor Cunha

    Hello,

By “…we are postponing the release until December 8th…” do you mean DOCMAN 1.5 RC2 or the final 1.5 Stable Version.
I was about to install (today) a download manager solution on a Jomla 1.5 Site. I’m Really behind schedule on this but I would postpone until 8th December to checkout a 1.5 Stable Version (with a new theme – great!).

Also I was considering both Docman and one other solution. I much prefer Docman but the ‘other’ as one feature that is a big plus for my project:

*front end folders/categories where I can set the view, download etc.. permissions and just drop the documents there (they get the ‘folder’ permissions).*

I think DOCMAN works only on a document basis, this still might do but need to be sure I can have the website registered customer uploading and accessing documents specific to each customer (not even seeing that other customers or their documents exist). Can this be set up in DOCMAN?

    Thanks

    Vitor

    2 days to go… :)

  • http://johan.janssens.me Johan Janssens

We mean the stable release offcourse. The RC2 went out to our testers a few days ago.

At the moment DOCman does indeed only work on a file basis. You can however set the global permissions that new documents should get.

DOCman has a very flexible plugin system that allows it to be used in almost any context and workflow. If the out of the box fetaures are not enough don’t hesitate to contact us (http://www.joomlatools.eu/services/request-a-quote.html) and we can see how we can help.

  • http://johan.janssens.me Johan Janssens

Thanks for reminding us ! Team is working hard, we need more coffee ! ;-)

From Brussels to Gent, not that far, how much cups do you need? GL and strength, thanks!

  • http://johan.janssens.me Johan Janssens

    More then a few ! :)

I’ve never been so excited for a release of an extension before or followed it’s progress so closely. Best wishes tomorrow on a smooth rollout! Thank you for your time and effort.

    Tim

  • http://johan.janssens.me Johan Janssens

Thanks Tim. Team is still cracking at it. Celebrating the release with a little extra surprise … :)

  • James

Can’t wait! I spent over an hour today looking for a way to avoid running legacy mode and just came across this thread. I’ll be up at the crack of dawn to check for the release.

  • Jérémie

    Release pleassssse :)

Congrats for your good work by the way

  • http://johan.janssens.me Johan Janssens

We pushed the release with 24h. A few last minute issues popped up. Working hard to fix them.

  • http://www.blackhillswebworks.com John Sundberg

    Vitor,

I’m also working on a doc management site that is behind schedule – and have been looking forward to DocMan’s release. What is this other extension that you are working with, if I may ask?

    John

  • James

Well, so much for the crack of dawn, but I guess it doesn’t matter anyway :-( Looking forward to the 24th then! Thanks for the great system. There’s definitely not a better document management system out there.

  • http://johan.janssens.me Johan Janssens

Sorry James ! We rather not rush out a release. It’ coming though. Rest assured.

  • Luu

When do you release now? 24 h or 24th of december?
    thanks for working on it!

  • JamesK

    Hello,
Where is the new DocMan that is supposed to be released today? Were to download it?

    Thanks!

  • http://johan.janssens.me Johan Janssens

James, thanks for asking. We have postponed the release with 24h to address a few last minute issues. Just a little more patience please :)

  • http://johan.janssens.me Johan Janssens

In 24 hours. We are getting very close.

  • christophe

    Hi John

This other solution was remository. But if I can configure DocMan to act the way I’ll need I’ll go with DocMan
